Indian Railways

The Indian Railways network is one of the world's largest, carrying over 23 million passengers daily. Train travel is an iconic Indian experience and an excellent way to see the countryside. The network connects nearly every corner of the country.

Train Classes Explained

$$$$
1AC (First AC) -- Private cabins with 2-4 berths, locking door, bedding, meals. Most expensive but very comfortable.
$$$
2AC (Second AC) -- Open compartments with curtains, 2-tier berths, bedding provided. Great balance of comfort and value.
$$
3AC (Third AC) -- Three-tier berths with curtains, bedding provided. Most popular class for budget-conscious travelers.
$
SL (Sleeper Class) -- Three-tier open berths, no AC, no bedding. Authentic experience but can be crowded. Very cheap.

How to Book

  • IRCTC -- Official Indian Railways booking site (irctc.co.in). Requires registration with an Indian mobile number or use a foreign tourist quota.
  • 12Go Asia -- Easiest booking platform for foreigners. Small service fee but accepts international cards.
  • Cleartrip / ixigo -- Indian booking apps that work well for train searches and bookings.
  • Foreign Tourist Quota -- Reserved seats on popular routes for foreign passport holders. Book at major station counters with your passport.

Buses

Buses fill the gaps that trains do not cover, especially to hill stations and smaller towns. India has both government-run and private bus operators, ranging from basic non-AC services to luxurious Volvo sleepers.

Bus Types

  • Local / City Bus -- Very cheap ($0.10 -- $0.30), often crowded, useful for short distances

  • Volvo / Premium AC -- Best private buses with charging ports, blankets, $8 -- $25

Booking Platforms

  • RedBus -- India's largest bus booking platform, great for private operators
  • MakeMyTrip -- Buses, trains, and flights in one platform
  • AbhiBus -- Good for South India routes
  • State transport websites -- For government buses (often cheapest)

Local City Transport

Auto-Rickshaws

The iconic three-wheeled yellow-and-green vehicles are everywhere in India. They are the quintessential Indian transport experience. In most cities, you will negotiate the fare before getting in, though some cities have metered autos.

Tips for Riding

  • Agree on the price before getting in
  • In metered cities (Mumbai), insist on the meter
  • Short trips should cost 30 -- 100 rupees ($0.35 -- $1.20)
  • Carry small change -- drivers rarely have it

Alternatives

  • Uber Auto / Ola Auto -- app-based, fixed pricing
  • E-rickshaws (battery-powered) -- common in Delhi, Kolkata
  • Cycle rickshaws -- in old city areas
  • Shared autos -- fixed routes, very cheap

Uber & Ola (Ride-Hailing Apps)

Both Uber and Ola operate in all major Indian cities. They are the most convenient option for tourists because prices are fixed, routes are tracked, and there is no language barrier or haggling.

  • Ola is India's homegrown competitor to Uber -- often has better coverage in smaller cities
  • Both offer Auto, Mini, Sedan, and Premium categories
  • Prices are 30 -- 60% cheaper than most Western countries
  • Airport transfers: $5 -- $15 in most cities
  • Pay by cash, card, or UPI (Ola Money / Uber wallet)

Metro Systems

Several Indian cities have modern, efficient metro systems that are the fastest way to beat traffic. They are clean, air-conditioned, and very affordable.

Delhi Metro

India's largest network, 250+ stations. Connects airport, Old Delhi, and New Delhi.

Mumbai Metro

Expanding rapidly. Complements the iconic local train network.

Bangalore Metro (Namma Metro)

Two lines covering key areas. Still expanding.

Kolkata Metro

India's oldest metro (1984). Covers north-south corridor.

Chennai Metro

Connects airport to city center and beach.

Hyderabad Metro

Modern system connecting major IT hubs.

General Transport Tips

Download offline maps

Google Maps works well in India. Download offline maps for areas with poor connectivity.

Book trains early

Popular routes sell out 30 -- 60 days in advance. Book as soon as the booking window opens (120 days prior).

Keep small bills

Always carry denominations of 10, 20, 50, and 100 rupees for auto-rickshaws and small purchases.

Avoid driving yourself

Indian traffic is chaotic by Western standards. Hire a driver or use ride-hailing apps instead.

Check for women-only carriages

Delhi Metro and local trains in Mumbai have women-only compartments -- useful for solo female travelers.

Use the Tatkal system

If trains are sold out, Tatkal (last-minute) tickets open at 10am the day before departure. Higher price but guaranteed seats.
