Taj Mahal Tickets 2026: Prices, Sunrise, Where to Book
Real 2026 prices, the sunrise strategy that locals and photographers use, how to avoid the Friday-closed trap, and which booking platform is worth the extra few dollars. Written for first-time visitors who want the shot without the scams.
Why a Taj Mahal Visit Needs Planning
World's #1 Monument for $13
Foreign adult entry is 1,100 INR (around $13 USD). That is cheaper than most Louvre, Colosseum, or Great Wall combo tickets, for arguably the most iconic building on earth.
Sunrise is the Moment
The first 10 to 15 minutes of dawn light hitting white marble is what every photographer comes for. Mid-morning sun is harsher, midday is a crowded haze. Sunrise is the shot.
Friday CLOSED, Plan Around It
The Taj Mahal complex is closed every Friday for prayers. A surprising number of unprepared visitors fly to Agra on a Friday and find the gates locked. Build your itinerary around this.

When to Go: Best Time Matrix
Sunrise (around 6:00am)
BestLightest crowds, softest light, first 10 minutes after the gate opens are magical.
8:00am to 10:00am
GoodStill clear skies but tour groups start filling the main platform.
11:00am to 2:00pm
AvoidHot, crowded, harsh overhead sun that flattens marble detail in photos.
Sunset (5:00pm to 6:00pm)
Romantic but busyGolden hour on the marble is beautiful, but all day-trippers are squeezing in.
Full Moon Nights
Unique5 nights per month, 40 visitors per 30 minute slot. Book at least 24 hours ahead at the ASI office.
Fridays
CLOSEDComplex is closed every Friday for prayers. Do not travel to Agra on a Friday unless you are combining Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri only.
October to March
Peak SeasonCool, dry, clear air. December dawns can be foggy. Book tickets in advance.
June to August
AvoidMonsoon heat and humidity. 40C days, hazy skies, and sudden downpours.
Friday Closure: Plan Around It
The Taj Mahal complex is closed every Friday for congregational prayers. This is not a seasonal rule. It is year-round and enforced. Tour operators will not tell you if your itinerary lands on a Friday because the trip still runs, you just do not see the Taj.
If your only free day in Agra is Friday
- Visit Agra Fort (open Fridays) for Mughal architecture.
- See the Baby Taj, Itmad-ud-Daulah, quiet and uncrowded.
- Cross the Yamuna to Mehtab Bagh for the Taj reflection across the river.
- View the Taj from outside the East Gate for free.
Golden Triangle timing tip
- Delhi to Agra on Thursday night, Taj Friday dawn will NOT work.
- Better: Delhi Friday, Agra Saturday dawn, Jaipur Saturday night.
- Or: Delhi Wednesday, Agra Thursday dawn, Jaipur Thursday night.
The Sunrise Strategy
Sunrise is the single best time to visit. Here is the exact playbook we use.
- Book the previous evening. Buy your ticket online the night before via ASI, GetYourGuide, or Viator. No queue at the counter.
- Stay near the West Gate. Hotels in Taj Ganj are walking distance. You want to leave your room by 5:15am.
- Enter at 5:30am. Gates open at or just after sunrise. Be at the security line by 5:30am, be in the first 100 people through.
- Walk directly to the reflecting pool. Do not stop for the gate photo, you can get that on the way out.
- Shoot wide, then close. The first 15 minutes of dawn light are your only real window. After that, tour groups fill the platform.
- Enter the mausoleum around 7:15am. The interior is dim, but by 7am there is enough light and the midday queue has not formed yet.
Full Moon Night Viewing
Night viewing at the Taj Mahal is the rarest ticket in India. It runs on 5 nights each month: the full moon itself plus the two nights before and after. No night viewing on Fridays or during the month of Ramzan.
The rules
- Only 400 people allowed per night, in 8 batches of 50.
- Each batch gets exactly 30 minutes.
- No mausoleum entry, viewing from a platform only.
- Viewing is 20:30 to 00:30 depending on moonrise.
How to book
- Tickets go on sale 24 hours before at the ASI office, 22 Mall Road, Agra.
- Office is open 10:00 to 18:00 daily.
- Bring your passport in person. No online booking for night slots.
- Price: 750 INR foreign adult, plus 200 INR if you want the mausoleum add-on (not accessible at night anyway).
Dress Code, Security, and What You Can Bring
Allowed
- Smartphone and camera (standard lenses).
- Small backpack, water bottle (will be X-rayed).
- Wallet, passport, ID.
- Shoe covers (provided free with foreign tickets).
Not allowed
- Tripods and professional video rigs.

- Large bags, books (yes really).
- Drones anywhere within a 5km radius.
Dress code
Modest dress is expected: shoulders and knees covered. Shorts and sleeveless tops are technically allowed on the grounds but you will get disapproving looks, and if you want to enter the mausoleum itself, cover up. Footwear must be removed or covered at the mausoleum entrance.

Private Car + Driver
3.5 to 4h$60 to $100 one way

Group Day Tour
14h round trip$80 to $150 per person
Pickup 6:00am, back in Delhi by 10:00pm. Includes Taj, Agra Fort, lunch. Rarely includes sunrise because of Delhi drive time.
Combining Taj with Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri
Your same-day Taj Mahal ticket gives you a 300 INR discount on three nearby Mughal sites when you present it at the other gate within 24 hours. This is official ASI policy but few tour operators mention it.
Agra Fort
650 INR, 350 INR with Taj ticket
UNESCO red sandstone fort, 2.5km from Taj. 2 hours is enough.
Itmad-ud-Daulah (Baby Taj)
310 INR
The tomb that inspired the Taj. Quiet, uncrowded, beautiful inlay work.
Fatehpur Sikri
610 INR, 310 INR with Taj ticket
Ghost city 40km from Agra. Half day visit, great on a Friday when Taj is closed.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- 1.Going on a Friday and finding it closed. Always check the day before you book transport.
- 2.Skipping the 200 INR mausoleum add-on, then realising you can only photograph the tomb from outside.
- 3.Arriving at 11:00am. Overhead sun glare washes out the marble and kills your photos.
- 4.Showing up without a pre-paid ticket in peak season. Expect a 2 hour queue at the gate counter.
- 5.Trusting an auto-rickshaw driver who offers a "shortcut" that conveniently routes through a commission shop.
- 6.Forgetting that shoe covers are required inside the mausoleum. They are provided free with foreign tickets.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much are Taj Mahal tickets in 2026?v
The 2026 foreign adult entry fee is 1,100 INR (about $13 USD) for general grounds access. Add 200 INR if you want to enter the main mausoleum. Indian adults pay 50 INR and children under 15 are free. Full moon night viewing is 750 INR plus 200 INR for the mausoleum.
What time does the Taj Mahal open?v
The monument opens at sunrise (around 6:00am in summer, closer to 6:30am in winter) and closes 30 minutes before sunset, usually 18:00 to 18:30. Your ticket is valid for 3 hours, tracked by QR code and fingerprint scan since 2020.
Is the Taj Mahal closed on Fridays?v
Yes. The Taj Mahal is closed every Friday for Jumu'ah prayers. This is the single most common mistake unprepared tourists make. Plan your Agra visit for any other day of the week.
Can you visit the Taj Mahal at night?v
Yes, but only on 5 specific nights each month: the full moon itself and two nights before and after. Slots are limited to 40 people per 30 minute session, viewing is from a distance behind a barrier, and tickets must be booked at least 24 hours in advance at the ASI office in Agra. No night viewing is permitted on Fridays or during Ramzan.
Should I pay extra to enter the mausoleum?v
If you want to see the cenotaphs of Mumtaz Mahal and Shah Jahan and photograph the interior inlay work up close, yes. The 200 INR add-on is worth it for most first-time visitors. If you are short on time or only care about the exterior photo from the reflecting pool, you can skip it.
What's the best time of day to see the Taj Mahal?v
Sunrise, without question. Arrive at the West Gate by 5:30am, be among the first 100 through security, and you will have 15 to 20 minutes of soft dawn light on the marble before the crowds arrive. Sunset is a second-best option but much busier.
How do I get from Delhi to the Taj Mahal?v
Four main options. The Gatimaan Express (1h45, around $12) is the fastest train. The Shatabdi Express (2h, around $10) is reliable and comfortable. A private car with driver takes 3.5 to 4 hours and costs $60 to $100 one way. Group day tours run $80 to $150 per person including entry and lunch.
Can I buy Taj Mahal tickets at the gate?v
Yes, you can buy tickets at the gate counter on the day of your visit, but in peak season (October to March, and any weekend) expect a 1 to 2 hour queue. Online purchase via asi.payumoney.com or a skip-the-line tour from GetYourGuide or Viator saves that time.
